I love feeling unsettled by gothics, but I do want to be able to at least follow the plot.

All characters are presumed White.Īnything you didn’t like about it? Although I appreciated Mele’s attempt, I ultimately found the story too confusing.

This ambitious novel was definitely strange and chill-inducing, with a riddle-like structure that will keep readers guessing until the end. For the final section, Emily takes over the narration and we hear about the actions that preceded the deadly blaze. Then the point of view shifts to Kennedy and we hear about what happened two summers ago and about the ghosts that have haunted Kennedy since childhood. No one remembers the fire very clearly or knows who sent out the invites, sinister tarot cards keep showing up, and Ryan mysteriously disappears. She’s been invited back for a final reunion, along with Ryan (Emily’s twin), Chase (golden boy and Ryan’s best friend), and Mila (the outsider and Chase’s girlfriend). What did you like about the book? Chelsea pulls up to her former girlfriend Kennedy’s rebuilt Adirondack “cottage”, which burned to the ground at the end of the previous summer with their friend Emily still inside.
